Ahmedabad, March2021: On the occasion of World Sleep Day 2021, Philips India organized an expert talk in Ahmedabad to create awareness about sleep disorders. The talk was given by Dr. Kalpesh Talati, Senior Consultant and Sleep Specialist, Zydus Hospital, Ahmedabad, Dr. Gopal Raval, Senior Consultant Pulmonologist, Ahmedabad and Dr. Arvind Sharma, Head of Department of Neurology and Stroke Specialist, Zydus Hospitals, Ahmedabad. A wide range of topics including the importance of sleep in life, sleep apnea and neurological effects of sleep disturbance were discussed at the event. Over the last few decades with the increase in incidence of lifestyle diseases, there has been a steady increase in the number of people who suffer from sleep disorders such as sleep apnea. Sleep Apnea is a sleep related breathing disorder which is characterized by cessation of breathing at the time of sleep.
Dr. Kalpesh Talati, Senior Consultant and Sleep Specialist, Zydus Hospital, Ahmedabad highlighted that “The level of awareness about sleep disorders such as sleep apnea is very low within the patient community. Sleep has a deep impact on our mental as well as physical health and untreated sleep apnea is known to increase the risk of high blood pressure, uncontrollable diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and stroke. We have organized this expert talk to increase awareness about such disorders. Sleep apnea is a treatable disorder and can be managed with the use of CPAP (Constant Positive Airway Pressure) therapy and people who have taken the therapy have reported a significant improvement in their health and quality of life.”
Dr. Gopal Raval,Senior Consultant Pulmonologist, Ahmedabadsaid “Expert talks like the one organized here are an important first step to create awareness about sleep apnea and empower patients to take action to improve their sleep health. While the symptoms for this disorder might seem relatively harmless at first, things can take a turn for the worst when it begins to impact patients’ daily lives. This World Sleep Day, I urge patients and physicians to take charge of sleep and actively diagnose and tackle sleep disorders.”
Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing throughout the sleep cycle. With symptoms like loud snoring, unwarranted daytime sleepiness and trouble in concentrating, sleep apnea impacts productivity and overall quality of life. Sleep apnea can also lead to graver health issues including cardiac conditions, strokes, neurological disorders, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity as has been noted in widely referenced clinical research papers.
