“I wish the show instills empathy in people,” says Ayub Khan from COLORS’ ‘Neerja… Ek Nayi Pehchaan’

COLORS presents ‘Neerja… Ek Nayi Pehchaan’, a captivating family drama that shows the lengths Protima, a mother will go to secure her daughter, Neerja’s future while residing in Kolkata’s infamous red-light district, Sonagachi. As she comes of age, sparks of love fly between her and Abeer, a scion of a reputed family. This bond is opposed by Didun, the madam of Sonagachi, Bijoy, Abeer’s father, and Shubhra, Abeer’s paternal aunt. What remains to be seen is if a life of dignity and love is on the cards for Neerja.

The seasoned actor Ayub Khan will be seen essaying the role of Bijoy Bagchi. Produced bySudhir Sharma’sSunshine Productions, ‘Neerja… Ek Nayi Pehchaan’ will air on the 10^th of July 2023 and thereafter every Monday to Sunday at 8:30 pmonly on COLORS.

1. Tell us something about the show Neerja…Ek Nayi Pehchaan.
2. Neerja…Ek Nayi Pehchaan is a social drama on COLORS, that tells a heart-warming story of a mother’s unwavering love for her daughter -Neerja. Despite being born and raised in Kolkata’s red-light district of Sonagachi, Neerja is protected from the dangers and prejudice of society by her mother. The show touches upon the struggles and sacrifices of a mother who will stop at nothing to secure her daughter’s future and fight the challenges that arise from living in an ill-famed place. On the other hand, residing in an affluent neighborhood, Abeer has the advantage of a healthy upbringing, but a blow of destiny awaits him. Neerja is innocent, and lovable, while Abeer is righteous and hardworking. The captivating tale will unfurl how Neerja and Abeer’s paths converge. It will capture how Abeer’s father, Bijoy plays a catalyst in taking their love story ahead.

 

2. Tell us about your character in the show. 
3. I am playing the role of Bijoy who is a 55-year-old father of three siblings including Abeer. He’s the head of the Bagchi family. He is a man of principles, who honours his tradition and morals to the hilt. He is a learned man and his tender approach toward life makes him a respected person. He runs the family business of construction and power loom with the help of his two sons, Sarthak and Kaushik. He holds a special place in his heart for his third son Abeer. It will be interesting for the viewers to see what twists and turns my character will bring in this compelling narrative.

 

3. How did you prepare for this role?
4. I rely mostly on my instincts and aim to maintain a sense of spontaneity and authenticity in my performances. When working on Neerja… Ek Nayi Pehchaan, the team provided me with a detailed narration, giving me insights into the character’s complexities. Building on this framework, I followed my approach of observing and interpreting the character, allowing it to naturally unfold within the story.

 

4. What drew you to the role of the father, who is a man of principles and has a heart of gold, in this show?
5. As an actor, I am intrigued by roles that allow me to explore the complexities of human emotions and showcase the power of love and empathy. Bijoy’s character presented me with the chance to delve into the depths of a father’s love and portray the inner conflicts and challenges he faces while upholding his principles. I was captivated by the chance to bring Bijoy’s journey to life and highlight the importance of familial bonds and the strength that comes from staying true to one’s core values.

 

5. What makes this show different from others?

Ek Nayi Pehchaan is a remarkable story that beautifully portrays the deep connection between a mother and her daughter, navigating through difficult situations that threaten the daughter’s prospects. This captivating social drama effortlessly weaves together emotions, drama, and romance, forming an engaging narrative. 6. In what ways do you hope viewers will connect with your character’s principles and his unwavering support for his son’s choices? Is there a message or lesson you want them to take away from your portrayal?

Bijoy embodies the essence of a supportive father figure, unyielding in his dedication to his child, despite society’s judgments. Through my portrayal, I seek to convey the importance of love and acceptance over societal norms and prejudices. I wish the showinstills empathy in people.
