JAMNAGAR: For centuries, Jamnagar has served as an ancestral home for the Dawoodi Bohra community and its leadership, and have contributed to the city’s progress through trade, education, and social welfare. This long-standing relationship with the city has taken a vital step forward as the community has partnered with the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation (JMC) to support the Rangmati River Rejuvenation Project. The initiative is particularly significant for the community as the project is underway alongside their community centre and the historic Vohra Hajira, a mausoleum with deep ties to their heritage.
To launch this partnership, members of the local community hosted a cleanup programme at the Rangmati River, led by the Municipal Commissioner for Jamnagar, Shri D.N. Modi. Following the cleanup, a formal ceremony was held to mark a significant contribution by the Dawoodi Bohra community towards the project’s restoration goals. Commissioner Modi later visited the Bohra community centre to discuss long-term cooperation and the shared responsibility of maintaining the city’s environmental health.
The Rangmati River serves as a vital ecological and cultural lifeline for Jamnagar, but urban growth has placed it under environmental strain. The JMC’s phased rejuvenation plan aims to restore biodiversity, improve flood resilience, and create vibrant public spaces. The community’s support is specifically directed toward upgrades near the Vohra Hajira, including the construction of retaining walls, riverbed channelisation, and structured landscaping.
In a statement of appreciation, the City Engineer of the Jamnagar Municipal Corporation said, “This invaluable support strengthens our commitment to restoring the river’s ecological balance and cultural significance. We look forward to working hand in hand with the various communities residing in Jamnagar, fostering collective responsibility and cooperation to ensure the successful and sustainable implementation of the project for the benefit of present and future generations.”
The initiative aligns with Project Rise, the Dawoodi Bohras’ global philanthropic arm, which works across regions on water security, environmental protection, and community wellbeing. The approach emphasises collaboration with local authorities, alignment with public policy priorities, and solutions rooted in long-term impact.
A senior member of the Jamnagar Dawoodi Bohra community said, “His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin has consistently guided us to contribute constructively to the cities where we live. Supporting the Rangmati River rejuvenation reflects our responsibility to Jamnagar and to future generations who depend on this river for their environment, health and quality of life.”
