In response to the ongoing boycott of major ride-hailing platforms by taxi drivers across Ahmedabad, consumer watchdog representatives have voiced critical concerns regarding passenger freedom, safety risks, and surging fare prices.
Since September 21, widespread reports from major transit hubs , including Ahmedabad Airport, Kalupur Railway Station, and Sabarmati Railway Station ,indicate that passengers are frequently being pressured by drivers to cancel bookings on established platforms like Ola, Uber, and Rapido. Passengers report being redirected to alternative services such as Bharat Taxi or offered off-app rides.
A significant point of concern for commuters is the sudden inflation of travel costs. Media reports and passenger accounts on platforms like Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) highlight cases where Bharat Taxi fares were significantly higher,in some instances up to double the rate of standard app options for the exact same route. Furthermore, off-app rides leave passengers completely stripped of essential safety features, trip tracking, and insurance coverage provided by verified digital platforms.
“Passengers must retain the right to freely choose their preferred mobility service without pressure, unexpected costs, or safety compromises,” stated a spokesperson for consumer safety initiatives. “Taking an off-app trip or being forced onto higher-cost platforms leaves travelers vulnerable. We urge transport authorities to intervene and restore fair, safe options for all commuters.”
