In a Gujarati family, finding a life partner is never just about two people. There’s usually a whole family involved, along with plenty of opinions, questions and, of course, a little matchmaking. That’s exactly what the Shemaroo Premiere Original – Haju Vaat Chaale Che, on ShemarooMe, brings to life with humour and warmth. The series follows
Shivani Dave, played by Jhanvi Gurnani, a confident and independent bank employee from a middle-class family in Vadodara. As Shivani meets one prospective partner after another in each episode, each meeting brings its own share of awkward moments, unexpected situations and family reactions. While her family is keen to see her settle down, Shivani wants to make sure she finds someone who feels right for her. What follows is a fun and relatable journey through family expectations, matchmaking and modern relationships, as Shivani learns that finding the right person may also mean understanding herself better.
Talking
about what makes the story relatable, Jhanvi Gurnani says, “I think every girl will find a little bit of herself in Shivani. She has grown up with the same conversations around marriage, family expectations and relatives trying to play matchmaker, but she doesn’t want to lose herself in all of that. She is clear about what she wants and wants to find someone right for her, not just someone who looks good on paper. What I really like about her is that she respects her family and her roots, but at the same time, she knows that her life and her choices matter too. That balance is what makes Shivani so real and relatable to me. And with ShemarooMe, we’ve been able to keep that flavour intact: the language, the relationships, the humour, all those little things that make the story what it is.”
Her story also reflects the quiet pressure many working women face to “settle down” while building lives on their own terms.
Speaking about how much of herself she sees in Shivani’s approach to marriage, Jhanvi adds, “I think Shivani and I share a very similar belief when it comes to marriage. We both believe that being a good daughter doesn’t mean saying yes to everything. Saying ‘no’ doesn’t make you difficult, it means you know your worth and you know what you want. Shivani respects her family, her roots and the values she has grown up with. Her journey isn’t about finding the perfect person, it’s about finding the right person for her, someone who respects the woman she is and the life she wants to build. I think it’s a conversation many young women today will relate to.”
With its mix of family dynamics, humour and contemporary conversations around relationships, Haju Vaat Chaale Che offers a relatable take on the arranged marriage journey, rooted in Gujarati culture while exploring emotions that are universal.
