Vadodara, November , 2024:
The University of East London (UEL) concluded its successful India Tour 2024 with a prestigious awards ceremony in Vadodara. The event celebrated the achievements of exceptional public figures in the area, with a particular focus on recognising and empowering women leaders–the ‘Women in Leadership Awards. These awards, co-hosted by Her Majesty the Queen of Baroda Maharani Radhikaraje Gaewad (an honorary alum of UEL), The Times of India, and UEL, which acknowledges the outstanding contribution to society and leadership impact, and they reflect UEL’s dedication to supporting marginalized communities and empowering women.
UEL’s commitment to gender equality is deeply rooted in its mission. The university has a strong track record of promoting women’s empowerment on campus and in the broader community. Initiatives such as the Noon Centre for Equality and Diversity in Business have been instrumental in advancing women’s rights and creating opportunities for women from diverse backgrounds.
By recognizing and celebrating women leaders, UEL aims to inspire the next generation of women to pursue their dreams and make a difference in the world. Through initiatives like the India Tour 2024, UEL is actively working to empower women and provide them with the tools and support they need to succeed. This is echoed strongly in the Queen of Baroda’s vision, which, with her extensive contribution and work with issues related to education and community development, aligns closely with UEL’s mission to foster social mobility and global opportunities.
UEL hopes to encourage young women to embrace their full potential and strive for excellence by showcasing the achievements of inspiring women leaders. The university’s commitment to gender equality and diversity is reflected in its efforts to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students, regardless of their background or gender.
According to Professor Amanda J. Broderick, Vice-Chancellor and President, University of East London, “Vadodara, a city steeped in royal heritage and a thriving economic hub, is the perfect backdrop for our final event of the India Tour 2024. By honouring women in leadership, we reaffirm UEL’s commitment to empowering women and fostering impact in our communities we serve. I take this opportunity to express my deepest thanks and continuing gratitude to HH the Queen of Vadodara, for her guidance and support in our activities as well as in our efforts to honour women leaders. This initiative aligns with our broader vision of creating a more inclusive and sustainable future, and we look forward to strengthening our ties with India.”
The University of East London (UEL) is actively working to empower women in India through various initiatives. UEL’s research, led by Dr. Meera Tiwari, has made significant contributions to improving menstrual health and literacy in rural India. The development of ‘Dignity Indicators’ and the promotion of signature literacy have empowered women and improved their overall well-being.
Additionally, UEL is focused on economic empowerment through projects like Sugarcrete®, which creates sustainable job opportunities for women. The university’s partnerships with organizations like the Naandi Foundation and the Queen of Vadodara further strengthen its commitment to women’s empowerment. In addressing issues such as health inequalities, visual impairment, and social justice, UEL is working towards a more equitable future for women in India.
