Eisha Singh looks back on becoming Juhi, the responsibility of portraying an autistic character with honesty and sensitivity, and why this journey has become one of themost unforgettable experiences of her career.
- Now that Juhi Mui is on air, how has the audience’s response been?
- Honestly, I’m just very happy. Before the show went on air, I was excited but equally nervous because Juhi Mui isn’t a typical show and Juhi isn’t a typical television character. I kept wondering how people would receive her. The love we’ve received has been overwhelming. The messages from viewers have been so heartwarming, especially when they tell me they connected with Juhi emotionally. The biggest compliment for me is when people say they stopped seeing Juhi’s autism and simply saw Juhi. That’s exactly what we wanted to achieve. I feel blessed that we could bring a story like this to television because shows like these don’t come very often.
- Tell us about Juhi and what made this character so special for you.
- Juhi will always hold a very special place in my heart because she’s unlike any character I’ve played before. It will be an honour to be remembered as Juhi. She’s incredibly intelligent, emotionally honest, and sees the world in her own unique way. She doesn’t try to fit into society’s idea of what’s “normal”, she simply stays true to herself. I think that’s what I admire most about her. More than anything, I wanted audiences to look beyond labels and simply see Juhiher intelligence, her kindness, her innocence, and her strength. Through her journey, I hope people realise that being different doesn’t mean being less; it just means seeing the world differently.
- How did you prepare for a role that demanded so much sensitivity?
- I actually started preparing for Juhi much before we began shooting. We had several workshops, I spent a lot of time researching autism, and I also met autistic individuals to understand their experiences better. It’s a huge responsibility to be entrustedthis role. I wanted to portray an autistic girl with honesty and empathy. Along my prep,I discovered how autistic individuals communicate, what comforts them, what overwhelms them, and how they process everyday situations. My intention was to cut through stereotypes. I wanted every little detail, her pauses, expressions, body language, and mannerismsto feel truthful. Playing Juhi has been one of the most challenging and deeply fulfilling experiences of my career because it taught me to observe and understand people much more deeply.
- What was the most challenging part of portraying Juhi?
- Honestly, everything about Juhi was challenging. The way she expresses happiness, sadness, grief, or even love is very different. For most of us, expressing emotions comes naturally, but Juhi experiences and communicates them in her own way. Understanding that emotional world took a lot of work. Every expression, every pause, every reaction had to feel genuine because even the smallest detail mattered. It pushed me out of my comfort zone as an actor, but it also became one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had.
- Juhi shares such a beautiful relationship with her father. What was it like working with Sanjay Suri?
- Working with Sanjay sir has honestly been one of the biggest learning experiences for me. What I love most about Juhi and Rajendra’s relationship is that it’s built on acceptance. He never tries to change her; he simply understands her and loves her exactly the way she is. Off screen as well, Sanjay sir brings so much warmth and honesty to every scene. Many of our moments together relied more on silence than dialogues, and sharing the screen with an actor of his calibre automatically makes you better. I’m really grateful I got the opportunity to work with him.
- Did portraying Juhi change you in any way?
- Absolutely. This show has taught me so muchnot just as an actor but as a person too. It made me realise that we can all be a little kinder and a little more understanding. Sometimes we judge people without knowing what they’re going through. This story shows that empathy can completely change someone’s experience. I genuinely feel very lucky that I got to play a character like her because she’ll stay with me for a very long time.One message I’ll never forget was from a mother whose son is autistic. She shared that other children wouldn’t play with him because people believed autism was contagious. That really stayed with me. It reminded me why stories like Juhi Mui matter and why raising awareness is so important. I hope the show makes the world a kinder place.
- What would you like audiences to take away from Juhi Mui?
- I just hope people continue giving Juhi the same love they’ve shown her so far. If there’s one thing I want audiences to take away, it’s to look at people with a little more empathy and a little less judgement. Bas itna hi kahungi- Juhi se open heart kesaathmiliyega. I promise you’ll laugh, you’ll learn, and by the end of every episode, you’ll probably find yourself reflecting on your own perspective.
